Schedule compression Definition
If a project is not on schedule, schedule compression techniques can be applied. Schedule compression is used to reduce the schedule without changing the scope of the project. You can only meet the deadline if your project scope has not changed and the project is on schedule.
According to project management certification courses, there are two ways to compress schedules. Let’s take a look at each approach to schedule compression one-by-one.
1. The first schedule compression technique: What is fast track in project management?
Fast Tracking is the first approach. Let’s give fast tracking project management definition. Critical path activities are performed in parallel with the fast-track schedule compression technique. This is possible only if the activities are not in compulsory dependency. You cannot do two activities at the same time if they are dependent on each other by their nature. You cannot test a screen before you have completed development. You can speed-track critical path activities that are dependent on each other due to resource dependency or discretionary dependence to complete remaining activities more quickly.

Let’s look at a sample of fast tracking. Let’s take Activity #1, Activity #2, and Activity #3 as an example of fast tracking. If you want to speed up the project, you can do Activity #2 and Activity #3 simultaneously after you have completed Activity #1. This is known as the fast tracking schedule compression approach.
The 2nd schedule compression technique: What’s crashing in project management management?
The second technique is called crashing. The crashing schedule compression technique is a compromise between schedule and cost. If the scope of the project is identical and the project is behind schedule, there is another way to compress the schedule. This is by putting additional resources on the remaining activities of the project. Activity duration will decrease if more than one resource can be assigned to an activity. This will make the project run faster. These extra resources weren’t in the original plan so there will be an additional cost for crashing to reduce the schedule.

Five major steps must be taken if a project is not on schedule.
First, assess the risks and re-estimate. Re-estimating the remaining activities can lead to shorter activity durations if the risks considered during planning are no more valid. Re-estimation will determine how long it will take to complete the remaining activities of a project.
If the re-estimation results is a later deadline for project completion then fast-tracking must be considered. To reduce the project duration, it is possible to evaluate remaining critical path activities and find activities that can be done in parallel.
